What Desperate Americans Are Buying the Most During COVID-19 Quarantines and Social Distancing

As cancellations and shutdowns continue, American shoppers continue to stockpile on canned goods, disinfectants, paper towels, toilet paper, and Kleenex. They also stocked their fridge with produce and perishables like eggs and meat. Interestingly, according to NPR, Americans are also stocking up on stress-eating snacks such as chocolate and potato chips.

Here are some of the key items that have seen the greatest jump in sales from the same week (end of March 14) last year.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PRODUCTS

  • Aerosol disinfectants: 518.9%
  • Thermometers: 497.7%
  • Rubbing alcohol: 277%
  • Multipurpose cleaners: 242.9%
  • Toilet paper: 212.7%
  • Hand sanitizers: 207.5%

FOOD (DRIED, PACKAGED, SHELF-STABLE)

  • Dried beans: 230.5%
  • Rice: 166.1%
  • Black beans: 150.4%
  • Chickpeas/Garbanzo beans: 156.8%
  • Tuna: 142.3%
  • Soup: 126.6%

FOOD (MEAT/ALTERNATIVES)

  • Canned meat: 187.8%
  • Chicken (fresh): 51.8%
  • Chicken (fully cooked): 35%
  • Chicken eggs: 44%
  • Plant-based meat alternatives (fresh): 279.8%
  • Plant-based meat alternatives (fully cooked): 84.6%

FOOD (SNACKS)

  • Popcorn: 47.7%
  • Pretzels: 46.7%
  • Potato chips: 29.6%
  • Pastries: 23.6%
  • Ice cream: 23.1%
  • Chocolate: 19%

  • Apples: 19.8%
  • Bananas: 16.6%
  • Papayas: 2.8%
  • Celery: 2.7%

  • Oat milk: 476.7%
  • Powdered milk products: 245%
  • Water: 99.4%
  • Milk: 32.4%
  • Soft drinks: 26.1%
  • Kombucha: 25.9%

DECLINING CATEGORIES:

  • Sunscreen: -17%
  • Vegetable party platters: -7.4%
