It’s not just your opinion. A new study finds that male drivers of high-status luxury cars such as Audi, BMW or Mercedes are more likely to be assholes.
Social Psychology researchers at the University of Helsinki conducted a personality survey on 1,892 Finnish luxury car owners after observing that these drivers were often seen driving too fast and too recklessly, and ignoring traffic rules.
The results from the personality survey were unambiguous: “Self-centered men who are argumentative, stubborn, disagreeable and unempathetic are much more likely to own a high-status car such as an Audi, BMW or Mercedes,” stated the researchers in a press release.
But not all luxury car owners suck. Interestingly, while men who drove high-status cars were discovered to be less kind, less cooperate and less considerate, the same was not true for females. No relationship was found between luxury cars and female self-centeredness.
In addition, the study revealed that some luxury car owners are not assholes but conscientious men and women. They are individuals who are respectable, organized, ambitious, and high-performing; people who desire high-status cars because they appreciate quality and wish to present an image of classy reliability.
How to tell the difference? Driving behavior. If they are cutting off pedestrians, speeding, and weaving through traffic, you are dealing with an asshole … but you knew that already.
