Lakeland Linder International Airport in Polk Country, Florida, was the scene of an emergency evacuation last Friday when a contractor opened a shipping container to unexpectedly find a massive guided missile inside.
Airport personnel were unsure how the live missile ended up a civilian airport, but the container belonged to Draken International, a US defense contractor based in the area.
While the missile was a “live” warhead, it was not armed. Regardless, the airport and surrounding neighborhoods were evacuated while technicians from nearby MacDill Air Force Base were called in to dispose of the missile.
The shipment was confirmed to have been flown into the Florida airport on an Amazon Air flight.
