A new battery cell technology unveiled by Nikola Corporation could be a game-changer in the tech and automotive worlds, offering greater energy storage, higher recharge capabilities, and recyclability.
Nikola Corporation designs and manufactures hydrogen-electric vehicles, electric vehicle drivetrains, energy storage systems, and hydrogen stations. Its newest battery has amazed the tech world, having four times the energy density of a lithium-ion battery, the ability to cycle more than 2,000 times, while still being environmentally friendly and easy to recycle.
Nikola stated that its new battery cell technology costs 50% less to produce than lithium-ion batteries. In addition, it could dramatically reduce the cost of hydrogen-based vehicles, as well as double the range of battery-electric vehicles from 300 miles to 600 miles. The new battery can also be used in existing vehicles.
“This is the biggest advancement we have seen in the battery world,” said Trevor Milton, CEO, Nikola Motor Company, in a press release. “We are not talking about small improvements; we are talking about doubling your cell phone battery capacity. We are talking about doubling the range of BEVs and hydrogen-electric vehicles around the world.”
