India Becomes Second Largest Smartphone Market Worldwide, Surpasses US

For the first time, the India smartphone market surpassed the U.S. becoming the second-largest smartphone market globally. The country reached 158 million shipments in 2019, according to Counterpoint’s Market Monitor.

India’s smartphone usage exploded due to the growth of mid-tier Chinese brands such as Xiaomi that allow enhanced features at lower price points. Aggressive promotions facilitated the rise of Chinese smartphones, causing China to sweep up 72% of the smartphone industry during 2019, a rise from 60% during 2018.

Vivo captured the second-place in the India smartphone market, while Samsung remained flat. Apple was one of India’s fastest-growing brands during the last quarter of 2019, due to price cuts on the XR and iPhone 11.
